Christmas and New Year at Akwamar Sunzal was amazing. Our steady flow of guests, those who stayed for the whole of the holidays, all made Christmas and New Year 2011 a wonderful experience.

We would like to thank all of our guests for helping make the festive season a great one for everyone and a HUGE thank you to all of our staff who worked so hard during this time and went that ‘extra mile’ to ensure that Akwamar Sunzal kept it’s peace and tranquility when ‘below the water’ we were all frantically paddling!

Rather than driving we took a transfer that runs from El Tunco through to La Antigua Guatemala. The operator is Bon Voyage located in La Antigua Guatemala. At $35 one way the ‘combined shuttle’ is a great way to get to Akwamar Sunzal from La Antigua for a few days surfing or just chilling out at the Salvadoran coast. The shuttle will bring you right into Akwamar Sunzal!

The shuttle can take between 5 and 7 hours depending on traffic and immigration.

On our way to La Antigua Guatemala we encountered a problem with a high volume of lorries on the road. This slowed our trip significantly and took the full 7 hours to get to our hotel in La Antigua Guatemala.

Our return trip was far more ‘peaceful’ with not quite so many lorries on the roads but a little bit of unfortunate timing meant that we arrived at the El Salvador Immigration desk just behind a 52 seat coach! This meant a long wait, over an hour, to clear immigration!

Although slightly frustrating, I guess it is just a part of traveling that we all have to accept from time to time.

Overall, the trip is very easy, comfortable, there is one section of road in Guatemala that leaves quite a lot to be desired as it is a very bumpy dirt track (currently being used ONLY due to bridge repairs). The roads on the El Salvador side are far superior to the Guatemalan roads.

The incredible setting sun and sunset that is in front of you the whole way as you are traveling along the CA-2 In El Salvador.

Just before entering La Antigua Guatemala we were fortunate enough to watch “El Fuego” volcano ‘performing’ a fiery dance in the night sky. A very warm red glow at the peak with lots of ash and a small trickle of lava!

A very important beach, one of the least crowded in the La Libertad area, it gives the sea turtles opportunity to make their way on shore and lay their eggs.

It is a very small project with limited funding but it is a very important project for the sea turtles of El Salvador!

There is a hatchery located on the beach and baby sea turtles are released from September through to the end of December!

We can arrange a visit to the small hatchery and, if the season is right, we will be able to watch the release of hundreds of baby sea turtles!

A great way to start your vacation at Akwamar Sunzal in El Salvador

For those already in the States, get yourselves to Miami! There are lots of good deals on internal flights, check the internet and then fly direct from Ft. Lauderdale to San Salvador with Spirit Air.

For those coming from Europe, direct flights can be expensive. There are lots of carriers now coming direct to San Salvador. One of my favorire ways is with Iberia out of Madrid. There are lots of inexpensive flights into Madrid from all over Europe and then Iberia will take you straight to San Salvador!

However, by far the cheapest way from Europe is to fly into the USA. I flew into Miami from Lisbon, direct, for about £350/$525. I then took a flight with Spirit Air from Ft. Lauderdale to San Salvador for around £100/$150!

The Spirit Air flight is around two hours forty minutes from Ft. Lauderdale. The times are not the best, arriving into San Salvador at around 01:20am but the transfer to Amwakar Sunzal is only 30 minutes and you are at the ocean!

TACA offer a good alternative to Spirit from Ft Lauderdale or Miami, their prices are quite a bit more expensive but departure times are more convenient!

The incoming tide is producing waves to 10′+ all along the El Sunzal area.

Gentle on shore breeze… IDEAL surf conditions!

A very beautiful morning here at Akwamar Sunzal and very still with only a very slight sea breeze. It is a near perfect morning for our Christmas guests to arrive!

The surf is looking quite small this morning! 2′ – 3′ and no real power. Later in the day when the tide turns may be better for getting out onto ‘El Sunzal Wave’ at El Tunco and catching the waves!
